I just got back from covering a barn fire out in Barrington Hills. The scene was intense, with fire engines and tankers everywhere. I snapped some photos that really capture the scale of the operation.
One shot shows Wauconda and East Dundee tankers filling portable tanks - it’s a great illustration of how they manage the water supply during such incidents. Another image captures the water shuttle process, with the supply officer coordinating the tankers dumping into those portable tanks.
There’s also a powerful photo of the actual barn fire - thick white smoke billowing as firefighters douse the remains with Class A foam. You can really feel the effort and focus in that moment.
Other shots include multiple fire engines lined up along Penny Road as crews wrap up their work, and close-ups of Barrington’s fire engine drafting water from those portable tanks. There’s even a nice shot of Arlington Heights’ new Ambulance 1 on standby.
For the gear geeks out there, I managed to get some good angles of two massive water tankers built on custom HME chassis. They’re impressive machines.
These images really tell the story of what it takes to fight a fire like this in a rural area. If you want to see more, you can check out the full gallery here.
It’s always humbling to witness the dedication and teamwork involved in firefighting. These photos are just a small glimpse into that world.
