Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 9-2-20

On Wednesday, September 2, 2020, before 1 p.m., Winnetka police and fire crews were called to a reported house fire at 614 Pine Lane. Battalion 28 was the first to arrive on the scene, a small, dead-end street where flames were visible from the C-Sector. The alarm was quickly upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional resources. Due to the narrow one-lane road, space for fire apparatus was limited. Glencoe Engine 30 stretched 400 feet of 5-inch hose to a hydrant on a cross street and then supplied Winnetka Engine 28 with another 400 feet of hose. Multiple lines were brought into the home as crews tackled heavy fire in the attic. Additional lines were also set up around the exterior of the structure. Approximately 20 minutes into the incident, the alarm was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm. Flames broke through the roof in at least three locations. In addition to interior attack lines, a cellar nozzle was inserted from the roof into one opening and later repositioned to a second area. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control without it spreading much beyond the attic. Later, two more engines were requested to provide extra personnel. The response included engines from Winnetka, Glencoe, Wilmetka, Northfield, Evanston, Highland Park, Lincolnwood, Deerfield, and Wheeling. Truck companies arrived from Winnetka, Glenview, and Skokie. Additional units included Morton Grove Squad 4, Northbrook Ambulance 11, and Wilmette Ambulance 27. One firefighter was evaluated by Northbrook Ambulance 11’s crew. Chief officers from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Northfield were on site. The residence is home to the Indonesian Consulate General.
