Chicago FD 6-3-1 high expansion foam unit

I wanted to share a few photos I took of the 6-3-1 high expansion foam unit during a training exercise back in September. These images really capture the unit in action and show how it operates under real conditions. The drill involved Engine 26, Truck 7, and Engine 103, and was led by Battalion 4.

Engine 103 was part of this drill because, if either Engine 26 or Truck 7 are unavailable, they're the next company ready to operate the 6-3-1. I was told that Battalion 4 also uses these drills with other units in the battalion to ensure everyone is comfortable and familiar with the equipment.

The 6-3-1 is an incredibly valuable tool, especially for fires that require "smothering," like basement fires, confined spaces, or small storefronts. It’s designed to fill large areas quickly with foam, which can help control and suppress fires more effectively in tight environments.

It's always interesting to see how different departments prepare and train with specialized equipment. These kinds of drills not only keep crews sharp but also help build teamwork and confidence when dealing with complex situations. I’m glad I had the chance to capture these moments.
