Another addition to Division 10 is the Hinsdale Fire Department. This single-station department employs 26 career firefighters who serve the town of Hinsdale, a small community covering approximately 4.64 square miles in DuPage County. The department operates two ambulances, three fire engines, and a tower ladder, ensuring comprehensive emergency services for the area. What sets Hinsdale apart is its distinctive color scheme—bright yellow with black roofs—which was once shared only by Carol Stream, another DuPage County department. While Carol Stream has since transitioned to a black-over-red scheme, Hinsdale remained loyal to its original look for many years. However, this unique style may soon be a thing of the past.
In 2008, Hinsdale received its newest piece of equipment: a Spartan/Rosenbauer/Metz Raptor tower ladder. Unlike the rest of the fleet, this unit was painted in a traditional "Chicago-style" black-over-red scheme, marking a subtle but significant shift. Interestingly, there's another local department with a similar aerial device—the Countryside Fire Protection District in Division 4 (Lake County). Their tower, however, is mounted on an HME chassis and features a white roof, making it visually distinct from Hinsdale’s unit.
The Hinsdale FD’s legacy color scheme has long been a point of pride for residents and firefighters alike. Though the new tower ladder signals a change, the department continues to honor its history while adapting to modern needs. As the fire service evolves, so too does the appearance of its apparatus, reflecting both tradition and progress.
This color scheme is unique to the area but does not appear to be around for too much longer.
