Here are a few pages from an old Prospect Heights Fire Department logbook. While many fire departments still maintain handwritten logs, this practice was discontinued here by 1981 for reasons that aren't entirely clear. The first recorded fire incident in the log was noted by Captain Ron Olsen, who later rose to the rank of deputy chief. After retiring from that position, he continued his service with the PHFD as a part-time fire inspector.
Chief Olsen also made the second entry in the log. Additional notes were added later by Lieutenant Warren Lippert and Captain Norm Bittner. Interestingly, Lt. Lippert’s son, Dean Lippert, is a retired firefighter from Arlington Heights. It also appears that around November 1, 1971, the PHFD adopted the Code 1, 2, 3, 4 system that's now widely used across many fire departments. I believe this system originated with the Elk Grove Village Fire Department.
These historical records give us a unique glimpse into the past operations of our department.
