This is from Larry Shapiro:
It's that time of year again... The RED Center received multiple calls late Monday morning regarding brush fires near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Wheeling, stretching from 444 Carpenter Street all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, they also got reports of additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District, near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Fire crews from Buffalo Grove were also responding to blazes near the tracks as far north as Route 22.
The railroad company halted all train traffic through the area and had another train that had recently passed through the region stop for inspection. Fortunately, all the fires were under control within about 90 minutes.
Here are some photos from the largest fire, which occurred behind 250 Carpenter Street, just south of Dundee Road. These images capture the intensity of the flames and the efforts of the firefighters on the scene.
