The first time I saw the Elios 3 in action was deep underground, in the world's deepest mine. It was at the Kidd Mine in Timmins, Canada, where we were testing a prototype of the Elios 3 alongside UAS Inc., a leader in drone-based mining surveys.
It’s one thing to read about features—like real-time 3D mapping or incredible stability that makes video look like a photo—but it’s another to see them in action. I was there to witness how the Elios 3 performed and what new possibilities it could bring to mining operations.
That morning, we descended 4,600 feet in a mining elevator before heading to a gallery for test flights. My colleague Johan Mlouka launched the Elios 3, and right away, the live 3D map on his tablet showed the surrounding environment. This gave him the situational awareness needed to fly without constantly looking at the drone.
This is a key feature of Flyability drones: most missions are conducted beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). The Elios 3, like its predecessor, is built for confined spaces, making it ideal for areas too dangerous or inaccessible for humans.
With the Elios 2, pilots relied on live video feeds. Now, the Elios 3 uses real-time 3D mapping, allowing operators to navigate using a 3D model instead. During our test at the Kidd Mine, the Elios 3 mapped a stope, helping assess mine stability and safety. We also flew through dusty areas, pushing the drone to its limits.
What stood out wasn’t just the technology—it was the reliability. The Elios 3 felt like a tool you could trust, not just a gadget. Like smartphones, which we use for so many tasks without thinking, the Elios 3 made flying feel effortless, letting users focus on their work rather than the drone itself.
Over four years, we worked with top universities and participated in DARPA’s Sub-T challenge, refining the Elios 3 through over 200 field tests. From this, we learned three key insights:
1. **Reliability Is Key** – Inspectors need tools they can count on every time.
2. **Ease of Use Drives Adoption** – The Elios 3 is designed to be simple, so even new users can operate it quickly.
3. **Meeting Industry Needs** – The Elios 3 is modular, adapting to different industries from mining to oil and gas.
The heart of the Elios 3 is FlyAwareâ„¢, a powerful software engine that enables its stability, 3D mapping, and future autonomy. With LiDAR, a 4K camera, and advanced lighting, the Elios 3 captures high-quality data even in total darkness.
We’ve also partnered with GeoSLAM to create survey-grade 3D models, useful for mining, infrastructure, and more. The Elios 3 isn’t just a drone—it’s a flexible, reliable solution for any inspection professional working in tight spaces.
We’re excited to take the Elios 3 on the road and invite you to join us at a demo near you.
