Late last night on December 30th, Larry Shapiro reported that the Buffalo Grove Fire Department was alerted to a small fire that had broken out outside a townhouse located at 211 Winding Oak Lane. Initially, Engine 26 was dispatched to check things out and confirm that the fire was indeed out. However, upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the flames had managed to creep under the rear sliding door and had spread into the crawlspace beneath the unit.
Realizing the situation was more serious than anticipated, the department quickly upgraded the response to a full-blown working fire alert. This prompted additional support from neighboring departments including Arlington Heights, Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, and Wauconda. It became necessary to remove nearly all the flooring in the affected unit to get a clear view of the crawlspace and ensure the fire hadn't spread beyond the single unit.
