Saturday afternoon (August 30), I found myself in Gary, Indiana when I witnessed a fire break out at a restaurant located at the intersection of 47th and Broadway. Fortunately, I happened to be near 35th and Broadway when the emergency call came in. The fire originated in the kitchen area, but thanks to the swift response of the firefighters, it was quickly brought under control.
In one of the initial images captured by Eric Haak, you can see a man in civilian clothes standing near the scene. That’s actually the restaurant owner, photographed moments after the first fire units arrived. He stepped away shortly afterward. If you had arrived just five minutes later, the entire scene might have looked completely different, as the fire was already well-contained by then.
One of the standout pieces of equipment on the scene was Engine 5, the newest addition to the fleet of firefighting vehicles. It stood out amidst the chaos, providing crucial support to the operation.
Attached are several photos taken by Eric Haak, each capturing different aspects of the firefighting effort. In one image, firefighters can be seen gearing up, preparing for potential entry into the building. Another photo shows them on the roof, working to ventilate the structure—a critical step in managing fires of this nature. The final image highlights Engine 5, standing tall and ready, symbolizing the modern tools available to today’s firefighters.
These photos not only document the event but also highlight the dedication and professionalism of the firefighters who responded so quickly. Their quick actions ensured that what could have been a devastating incident was handled efficiently and safely.
