3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 4-29-16 (more)

Radio traffic from the 3-11 alarm fire

This account comes from Steve Redick:

The fire occurred on the evening of April 30th, near 48th Place and west of Kedzie Avenue. Initially, crews responded to an auto fire adjacent to a building, but soon upgraded it to a working fire. From what I could tell, the structure was fire-resistive with concrete floors. The fire involved a large amount of mattresses and foam padding on the first floor. The weather was terrible—rain kept the smoke low and visibility extremely limited. Flash photography was nearly impossible, and both my camera and I ended up soaked. The new TL 39 and TL 54 ladders were used with their buckets low to the ground, allowing for deep stream penetration into the first floor. Multiversals and multiple handlines were also deployed. The attack lasted several hours, and in the later stages, cautious interior assessments were made using thermal imaging cameras and search ropes.

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

Two firefighters were injured after an "incendiary and suspicious in nature" extra-alarm fire broke out at a mattress warehouse Saturday evening in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The fire started around 7:40 p.m. at the four-story warehouse near South Christiana Avenue and West 48th Place, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The response to the blaze was raised to a 2-11 alarm about 8:30 p.m. and to a 3-11 alarm about 9 p.m.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries as a result of the fire. One of them was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, and the second firefighter was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Both are in good condition.

The blaze was extinguished around 10:45 p.m. An investigation by the fire department determined the fire was suspicious, and the Chicago Police Department will continue the investigation.

This event was a significant incident that tested the response capabilities of the Chicago Fire Department. Despite challenging conditions, crews managed to contain the fire and ensure the safety of all personnel. It's a reminder of the dangers faced by firefighters every day and the importance of preparedness and coordination during large-scale emergencies.
