This report comes from Eric Haak:
At 1624 hours on Friday, December 7th, a fire broke out in an abandoned two-story building located at the corner of Drake and 16th Street in Chicago. The structure was a 50 by 125-foot ordinary building with apartments above commercial spaces. The initial response included engines 38 and 109, trucks 48 and 32, along with the 14th Battalion. Truck 26 served as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) under the 13th Battalion. Just six minutes after the first units arrived, the companies shifted to a defensive position when Truck 48 reported a dangerously weakened roof.
At 1635 hours, the 14th Battalion requested the still and box, followed by a 2-11 alarm nine minutes later, escalating to a 2-2-1 alarm. Squad 1 used a snorkel from a vacant lot to the southeast of the fire building, while Tower Ladder 54 took up position in Sector 1 on 16th Street. Tower Ladder 5 operated on Drake Street, directly west of the fire scene.
These images, captured by Eric Haak, provide a powerful visual record of the incident. The photos show the intensity of the fire and the critical operations being conducted by firefighters during the emergency. Each image gives a different perspective, highlighting the challenges faced by the responding units.
