Here are some pages from an old Prospect Heights fire logbook. While many fire departments still maintain handwritten logs, this practice was discontinued here by 1981 for reasons that remain unclear. The first fire entry in the book was recorded by Captain Ron Olsen, who later rose through the ranks to become a deputy chief. After retiring from that position, he continued to serve with the PHFD as a part-time fire inspector.
Chief Olsen also made the second entry in the log. Additional notes were added later by Lieutenant Warren Lippert and Captain Norm Bittner. Interestingly, Lt. Lippert’s son, Dean Lippert, is a retired firefighter from Arlington Heights. It also appears that around November 1, 1971, the PHFD adopted the Code 1, 2, 3, 4 system—commonly used by many fire departments today. I believe this system originated from the Elk Grove Village Fire Department.
These pages offer a rare glimpse into the past of the Prospect Heights Fire Department. They show how operations were documented before the shift to digital systems. It's fascinating to see how early firefighters recorded their activities, and it gives us a sense of the dedication and professionalism that has always defined our department. These records not only preserve history but also help us understand how far we've come over the years.
