Chicago Still & Box Alarm, 2-15-15

This is a message from Eric Haak:

The Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire in the 1900 block of West Devon at 3:30 AM on Sunday, February 15, 2015. The incident was eventually upgraded to a still and box alarm, and firefighters took a defensive position. What isn't visible in the photos is that the building had a T-shaped layout with a large extension in the back. A resident was rescued by the police and taken to a local hospital. The temperature was around zero degrees, which caused everything in the area to be covered in ice. I used the opportunity to capture some images of engine companies that I don’t usually get to photograph.

These images give a real sense of the harsh conditions the firefighters faced that night. The cold made everything slick and difficult to navigate, adding an extra layer of danger to an already intense situation. It’s always interesting to see how different units respond under pressure, and these shots show the dedication and teamwork involved in such emergencies. If you ever have the chance to witness a fire scene up close, it's a powerful reminder of the bravery and professionalism of our first responders.
