Chicago Still & Box Alarm, 2-15-15

This message comes from Eric Haak:

The Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire on the 1900 block of West Devon early Sunday morning at 3:30 AM on February 15, 2015. The incident was eventually upgraded to a still and box alarm, and crews went into a defensive position. What isn't visible in the photos is that the building had a T-shaped layout with a large extension extending out from the back. A resident was rescued by police and taken to a local hospital. The temperature was around zero degrees, which caused everything in the area to freeze over. I took the chance to capture some shots of engine companies that I don’t usually get to photograph.

It was a tough call for the firefighters, especially with the freezing conditions making it even more challenging. I’ve been following these incidents for years, and this one stood out due to the extreme weather and the structure’s unique design. It’s always interesting to see how the crews adapt under such conditions. These images give a glimpse into the real challenges they face, and I’m glad I could capture them.
