Saturday afternoon (January 28, 2017), around 1:30 PM, a fire broke out in an old, historic home dating back to the 1800s. This home is located at the intersection of 45th and Ellis. By the time I arrived, the 5th Battalion had already managed to contain the fire. From what I could see, the flames seemed to be concentrated in the attic area. Fortunately, the fire didn’t spread to the nearby vacant building, which was reported to be in poor condition. Instead, it was confined to the part of the structure that was still occupied.
The images below capture the intensity of the situation. In one shot, you can see heavy smoke billowing from the roof down toward the adjacent townhouse. Another image shows firefighters raising a large ground ladder, working diligently to control the blaze. There are also photos of Chicago Fire Department Tower Ladder 37 and Engine 45 on the scene, showcasing their efforts to manage the situation. You’ll notice some shots feature firefighters with soot-covered faces, testament to the hard work and dedication they put into tackling the fire. One particularly striking image captures a fire chief on-site, guiding operations and ensuring everything is under control.
It's moments like these that highlight the bravery and professionalism of our firefighters. They face dangerous situations daily, often putting themselves in harm's way to protect others. These photos really drive home the scale of the effort required to handle such incidents. The collaboration between different units and the strategic approach taken by the department were evident throughout this response.
I’m grateful to have been able to document this event and share these moments with everyone. It’s important to recognize the sacrifices made by those who serve our community in such vital roles. Let’s take a moment to appreciate their commitment and courage.
