Fatal fire in Evanston, 3-10-22

Here’s an excerpt from the City of Evanston:

EVANSTON, IL – On Thursday, March 10, around noon, local firefighters were called to 1516 Brummel Street after reports of smoke coming from a residential building.

When first responders arrived, heavy black smoke was already visible from the basement of the single-family home. Fire crews quickly encountered intense fire conditions on the lower level and immediately escalated the response to a Box Alarm. Three hose lines were deployed, and neighboring fire departments were called in to help control the blaze.

The property owners had returned home to find smoke coming from their house. Before emergency services arrived, one of them, an 87-year-old man, went inside to check the source of the smoke. When firefighters reached the scene, they found him at the bottom of the basement stairs and quickly rescued him. Emergency medical care was provided, and he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.

Family members were notified, and support services were offered by the Evanston Fire Department Chaplain Monte Dillard and the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, it's reported that smoke detectors were working properly at the time of the incident. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), it's crucial for residents to test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least once or twice a year. If a detector activates, people should immediately leave the building and call 911 for assistance.
