Magnesium oxide

MgO, commonly known as bitter soil, is a white powdery solid. The melting point is 3125K, the boiling point is 3873K, the density is 3.58g/cm 3 (298K), and the hardness is 6.50. MgO is somewhat inert to water, especially MgO after high temperature calcination is insoluble in water. MgO is soluble in acid.
Preparation method of MgO:
(1) combustion of magnesium metal at a high temperature.

2Mg + O 2 == 2MgO

(2) Magnesium oxide is generally produced industrially by calcining magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide.

MgCO 3 ==== MgO + CO 2

Mg(OH) 2 ==== MgO + H 2 O

The calcination temperature is about 923K, which is made of light MgO, and the calcination temperature is 1923K or more, which is made of MgO.
MgO is widely used in refractory materials, cermets, and electrical insulating materials. Magnesium cement can be prepared by mixing light MgO with MgCl 2 or MgSO 4 solution. Medically, MgO is used as an antacid and a laxative. Often used in conjunction with CaCO 3, which is prone to constipation. MgO has important applications in water treatment, man-made fiber fabric processing, paper making, and catalyst production.
