We may be big fans of solar power, but we also cheer for other renewable energy pioneers. In light of that, here's some incredible news that could really boost the renewable energy cause globally.
A recent report released by CDP, the international environmental nonprofit, reveals that over 100 cities worldwide are now primarily powered by renewable energy sources. This represents a substantial move away from conventional fossil fuels, with the number of cities adopting clean energy doubling since 2015. Back then, CDP’s records showed only 42 out of 570 cities were using renewable energy. Fast forward to today, and that figure has soared to 101 cities.
While there’s still a long way to go, this development is nothing short of transformative. It signals a seismic shift toward sustainability that deserves recognition and celebration.
The Path to a Greener Tomorrow
Nicole Bartlett, CDP’s Director of Climate Change, attributes this growth partly to the increasing number of cities being included in CDP’s monitoring systems and partly to the growing global acknowledgment of renewable energy’s immense potential. Bartlett stated in a press release, “Our findings provide a comprehensive view of how cities are embracing renewable energy.†She added, “It’s encouraging to see such strong commitments and ambitions. Not only do these cities aspire to transition to renewable energy, but they also have the means to achieve it.â€
The cities highlighted in CDP’s report span a wide range of geographic and economic contexts, proving that renewable energy is no longer exclusive to specific regions or industries. From Nairobi to Oslo, Auckland to Reykjavik, major cities around the globe are taking bold steps towards cleaner energy solutions. Reykjavik, in particular, serves as a model city. The capital of Iceland derives all its electricity from hydropower and geothermal sources and aims to eliminate fossil fuel use in vehicles and public transport by 2040.
Progress isn’t limited to distant shores. Closer to home, more than 14 UK towns have committed to the UK100 initiative, which targets achieving 100% clean energy by 2050. Recent additions to this ambitious effort include Liverpool City Region, Bristol, Bury, and Peterborough.
Become a Part of the Renewable Revolution
As momentum builds, envisioning a cleaner, greener future becomes more realistic. Solar energy remains a key player in this vision, and joining the movement has never been easier.
