More Than 100 UK Cities Powered by Renewable Energy

We may be die-hard supporters of solar power, but we also root for the rest of the renewable energy gang. That being said, we're thrilled to share this monumental piece of news that could significantly accelerate the growth of the renewable energy sector.

Recently released data from the non-profit environmental research organization CDP reveals that over 100 cities worldwide are now primarily powered by renewable energy sources. This represents a major leap away from conventional fossil fuels, and the count of cities relying on clean energy has nearly doubled since 2015. Back then, CDP identified just 42 out of the 570 cities they track as utilizing renewable energy. Fast forward to today, and that figure has surged to 101.

Clearly, there's still a ways to go, but this development deserves recognition as a groundbreaking advancement in the right direction.

The Dawn of a New Era

Nicole Bartlett, CDP’s Climate Change Director, attributes this milestone to two key factors: the growing number of cities integrated into CDP's network and the increasing global acknowledgment of renewable energy's vast potential. In her remarks to the press, Bartlett stated, “This provides a complete overview of what cities are doing concerning renewable energy."

"It’s heartening to see such strong commitment and ambition reflected in our findings. Not only do cities aspire to transition to renewable energy, but they also possess the capability to achieve it."

The cities highlighted in CDP's report showcase remarkable diversity, illustrating the broad spectrum of possibilities. Solar energy is no longer exclusive to specific regions or industries—it's now within reach for homeowners, small businesses, and large corporations alike.

From Nairobi and Oslo to Auckland and Reykjavik, numerous major cities are embracing the shift toward cleaner energy. Reykjavik, in particular, serves as a shining example. The Icelandic capital generates all its electricity through hydropower and geothermal resources and aims to eliminate fossil fuel usage in vehicles and public transportation by 2040.

Progress is also happening closer to home. More than 14 UK towns have joined the UK100 initiative, which aims to achieve 100% clean energy by 2050. Recent additions to the UK100 include prominent areas like Liverpool City Region, Bristol, Bury, and Peterborough.
