From the Plainfield Fire Protection District:
I just received some heartbreaking news about one of our own. Mike Ludemann, our beloved Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT), unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2016. He was only 54 years old. Mike had been a dedicated member of the Plainfield Fire Protection District for over a decade, joining us back in 2004. To say he'll be missed would be an understatement—he was truly one of a kind.
Everyone who knew Mike remembers him as someone who always put others first. Whether it was fixing our fire trucks or lending a helping hand to a colleague in need, Mike never hesitated. His sudden loss has left a huge void not just within our department but throughout the entire community he served so faithfully.
There will be a visitation this Thursday, February 25th, from 3 PM to 8 PM at Overman-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, located at the intersection of Routes 30 and 59 in Plainfield. The funeral service is scheduled for Friday morning, February 26th, at St. John Lutheran Church on Plainfield Road in Joliet. Following the ceremony, interment will take place at the Plainfield Township Cemetery.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary, Mike's wife and fellow firefighter, along with their families during this incredibly difficult time. If you'd like to pay your respects, please consider attending either event.
Meanwhile, the local paper, the Herald-News, also covered Mike's untimely passing. According to Fire Chief David Riddle, Mike had been feeling unwell on Sunday and was rushed to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where he tragically passed away later that afternoon. Chief Riddle mentioned that Mike had no prior health issues that suggested anything serious could happen.
Mike wasn't just responsible for maintaining our fleet; he also built strong bonds across various departments in Plainfield. Prior to joining us, he worked on equipment for both Lockport Township and Downers Grove fire districts. As Chief Riddle noted, Mike became indispensable to everyone here after coming aboard in 2004. He was affectionately known as "the go-to guy" around the station.
To honor Mike's memory, the fire district plans to hold a special tribute during his wake—a solemn walk-through ceremony. It's clear that Mike touched countless lives and left an indelible mark on each person fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Rest easy, Mike—you’ll forever remain in our hearts.
