Following the tragic death of George Floyd, violent unrest swept across Chicago, leading to a wave of fires that destroyed dozens of businesses and vehicles. In response, Chicago police and federal investigators have been working together to identify those responsible for the chaos. Due to the massive scale of the incidents, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) was brought in to assist with the investigation.
The national response team spent weeks reviewing surveillance footage, and on Tuesday, they released images from just 10 of the fires that occurred during the unrest. One of the scenes captured shows two suspects entering a looted City Sports store in Englewood on May 31. One of them uses a lighter to ignite some papers on the floor. A similar act was recorded at a beauty supply store in Archer Heights, where a suspect poured a flammable substance over a counter before setting it ablaze.
Across the city, from the Loop to the South and West Sides, hundreds of stores were looted and dozens of fires were set during the weekend of May 31 to June 3. The Chicago Police Department, in collaboration with federal authorities, has released surveillance videos and photos of 19 individuals suspected of involvement in some of the 53 fires. These materials are now available on the CPD’s YouTube channel, with the hope that public awareness will lead to arrests.
Those arrested could face federal charges as part of a broader effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to hold accountable anyone involved in criminal activity during the civil unrest.
