This past week at Autodesk University 2020 was truly unforgettable. The event was jam-packed with exciting updates and the unveiling of several new tools that we’ve been working on with and for all of you. It almost felt like a more personal experience compared to previous in-person conferences because we introduced so many innovative ways for everyone to connect—whether it was with each other or with Autodesk employees.
The highlight of the week for me, and something I’m incredibly excited about, is our recent agreement to acquire Spacemaker. Once this deal goes through, Spacemaker will become part of Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Design Solutions Group—my team—and bring us a robust platform to push forward modern, user-focused automation powered by artificial intelligence. This will significantly enhance our outcome-driven design capabilities for architects and property owners alike. Before I go any further, the legal team insists I remind you that “this transaction is subject to standard closing conditions and is expected to conclude during Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, which ends January 31, 2021.â€
Spacemaker, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, specializes in cloud-based AI technology designed to help architects, urban planners, and real estate developers maximize the potential of a building site, particularly during the initial stages of design. Their platform offers more sustainable design options right from the start of a project, fostering collaboration across all project disciplines. This early-stage optimization not only accelerates understanding but also empowers decision-making by providing better data, automation, and insights. One of the key factors behind Spacemaker’s rapid success has been its exceptional team. With 110 employees, over 60% of whom are on the technical side—including practitioners, data scientists, PhDs, software engineers, and designers—they’re perfectly equipped to tackle the complex challenges facing the AEC industry. Interestingly, Spacemaker’s CEO and co-founder, Havard Haukeland, is an architect turned entrepreneur.

By integrating Spacemaker into our offerings, customers will have the flexibility to explore various design iterations while fine-tuning these solutions to fit specific site requirements. This will allow them to spend more time focusing on the creative elements of their work. Over the next few months, we’ll be collaborating closely with the Spacemaker team to expand their current operations while exploring ways to merge their technology into our existing suite of products. There’s a good chance we’ll find opportunities to leverage our AEC conceptual design tool, FormIt, and streamline workflows with Revit. Additionally, Spacemaker complements our existing analysis tools, such as our carbon analysis tool, Insight, and we’re eager to enhance sustainability analysis for our clients.
With this acquisition, we’re not just investing in architecture—we’re pushing forward with greater automation across our product line as we continue innovating to support the future of building information modeling (BIM).
I’m thrilled to officially welcome the Spacemaker team to Autodesk, reinforcing our dedication to you and the future of design.
