Spacemaker Acquisition Gives Architects and Developers ‘Automation Superpower’

Last week at Autodesk University 2020 was nothing short of incredible. The event was jam-packed with updates and the unveiling of brand-new tools we’ve been working on together with you. Even though it was virtual, there was something uniquely personal about it, thanks to the many innovative ways we found to connect with both you and our Autodesk team members. The highlight of the week for me—and something I’m personally super excited about—is our recent agreement to acquire Spacemaker. As part of Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Design Solutions Group (which happens to be my team), Spacemaker will bring us a robust platform powered by AI, allowing us to push forward modern, user-focused automation. This acquisition will turbocharge our ability to deliver outcome-driven design solutions specifically tailored for architects and building owners. Of course, the legal team insists I mention that “this deal is still subject to standard closing conditions and is expected to wrap up during Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, which ends January 31, 2021.” Spacemaker, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, has developed cutting-edge cloud-based AI tech designed to help architects, urban planners, and real estate developers unlock the full potential of any building site, especially during the initial design phases. Their approach not only optimizes projects but also prioritizes sustainability right from the start. This early-stage design refinement accelerates comprehension and fosters collaboration across all teams involved. By integrating Spacemaker into our offerings, we’re addressing the growing demand among our clients for better data, automated processes, and actionable insights to inform decision-making. One of the key drivers behind Spacemaker’s rapid success is its stellar team. With 110 employees, over 60% of whom are technical experts—ranging from practitioners and data scientists to PhDs, engineers, and designers—they’re well-equipped to tackle the complex challenges facing the AEC industry. Interestingly enough, Spacemaker’s CEO and co-founder, Havard Haukeland, started out as an architect before transitioning into entrepreneurship. ![Spacemaker Team](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e6a17a4deb6eba72b20bd27b9580e3f5.jpg) Adding Spacemaker to our lineup means our customers can experiment with various design iterations while simultaneously optimizing outcomes to fit specific site requirements. This shift gives them more bandwidth to focus on the creative side of their work. Over the next few months, we’ll be collaborating closely with the Spacemaker crew to expand their existing business while exploring opportunities to merge their tech into our current product range. There may even be chances to enhance FormIt, our AEC conceptual design tool, and streamline workflows with Revit. Additionally, Spacemaker complements our existing suite of analysis tools, like Insight for carbon analysis, and we’re eager to enhance sustainability assessments for our users. This acquisition isn’t just a vote of confidence in architecture—it’s a strategic move to infuse more automation into our products as we pioneer the future of Building Information Modeling (BIM). I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the Spacemaker team aboard at Autodesk, strengthening our dedication to you and the future of design. --- **Safe Harbor Statement** This post includes forward-looking statements that come with inherent risks and uncertainties. These statements cover topics such as the planned Spacemaker acquisition, its impact on Autodesk’s business and performance, how it affects our respective products, services, customers, and partners, and Autodesk’s broader strategic goals. Actual results might vary significantly due to factors like our ability to smoothly integrate Spacemaker’s operations, associated costs, the competitive landscape in architecture, urban planning, and real estate, the success of new product development efforts, and whether we can meet the conditions necessary to complete the acquisition on time—or at all. For more details on potential risks affecting Autodesk’s financial health, check out our Form 10-K and subsequent Forms 10-Q filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. We don’t plan to update these forward-looking statements to reflect events occurring or circumstances arising after they were made.
