Autodesk open sources RV to democratize access and drive open standards

Autodesk has always believed in empowering creators to imagine and build a better future. One of the most effective ways to do that is by providing them with powerful tools. That’s why we’re excited to announce that RV, our award-winning media review and playback software, is now open source. Alongside contributions from DNEG’s xStudio and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ itview, this initiative will help shape the Open Review Initiative — the Academy Software Foundation’s (ASWF) latest sandbox project aimed at creating a unified, open-source toolset for playback, review, and approval.

As a founding member of ASWF, Autodesk supports the organization’s mission to promote open-source software across the motion picture industry. Launched in 2018 under The Linux Foundation, ASWF aims to streamline global collaboration and foster innovation through shared technologies.

"Sharing RV with the open-source community is a natural step in our journey toward cloud-based workflows and open standards like MaterialX, OpenTimelineIO, and USD," said Diana Colella, SVP of Media & Entertainment at Autodesk. "With content demand at an all-time high, we're thrilled to support greater flexibility and resilience within the industry."

RV offers professional-grade media playback capabilities that enable VFX artists, animators, and production teams to view high-resolution images and sequences in real time. It also allows for easy comparison of different versions during collaborative projects, making it an essential part of many studios' workflows.

"RV plays a key role in our animation pipeline, and this move enables us to share our integrations with the broader industry," said Darin Grant, CTO of Animal Logic and AWSF board member. "It's similar to what we've done with Autodesk and Pixar, integrating our ALUSDMaya toolsets into the Maya-USD plugin. Like their contributions to OpenColorIO, Autodesk is once again showing its commitment to open source by sharing foundational libraries that help drive the industry forward."

Autodesk acquired RV from Tweak Software in 2015 and integrated it into the ShotGrid production management platform. This integration has helped eliminate workflow bottlenecks, enabled live collaborative reviews, and accelerated the review process. While RV will now be open source, Autodesk will continue to support it commercially as part of the ShotGrid ecosystem.

High Stability Laser

CNI develops and produces high stability diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers and diode lasers, the wavelength covering range is from the ultraviolet to the infrared band (213 ~ 3800 nm). Linear prisms, fiber coupling, Beam Expander and other accessories can be attached. The switch and output power of lasers are controlled by the RS232 interface connected to a computer. With high stability and compact design, the high stability lasers are widely used in light instructions, test and analysis equipment, optogenetics, Laser medicine and other fields.
