This is from Steve Redick:
After returning from Arkansas, I brought back a lot of my dad’s collection. One item on his wall was a series of 3x5 color prints from a fire that occurred on May 11, 1974. It was a cold storage warehouse, and I remember it burning for days. At some point, the building collapsed onto an adjacent structure, triggering an additional alarm. We arrived well after the initial call and toured the fireground, capturing these images of some classic fire trucks in action. The photo with Big John in the background is likely one of the few where both water cannons were operational. Usually, they couldn’t get enough water pressure to use both at the same time. Also, note the 2000-GPM LaFrances that often used both ports on the hydrant. They had a rule that no other pumper could share a hydrant with a 2000-gallon rig, allowing them to fully utilize both steamer ports. The photos were in terrible condition—colors were off and faded. I was surprised by how much of the damage I managed to restore. They’re not perfect, but at least they’re now usable. I think if I converted them to black and white, they’d be almost flawless. Enjoy this piece of history.
