Chicago 5-11 at 1520 S Indiana in 1974

This is from Steve Redick:

After returning from Arkansas, I brought back a lot of my dad’s collection. One item on his wall was a series of 3x5 color prints from a fire that occurred on May 11, 1974. It was a cold storage warehouse, and I remember it burning for days. At some point, the building collapsed onto an adjacent structure, triggering an additional alarm. We arrived well after the initial call and toured the fireground, capturing these images of some classic fire trucks in action. The photo with Big John in the background is likely one of the few where both water cannons were operational. Usually, they couldn’t get enough water pressure to use both at the same time. Also, note the 2000-GPM LaFrances that often used both ports on the hydrant. They had a rule that no other pumper could share a hydrant with a 2000-gallon rig, allowing them to fully utilize both steamer ports.

The photos were in terrible condition—colors were off and faded. I was surprised by how much of the damage I managed to restore. They’re not perfect, but at least they’re now usable. I think if I converted them to black and white, they’d be almost flawless. Enjoy this piece of history.

These images are more than just old photos—they're a glimpse into the past, showing the powerful and iconic fire apparatus that once roamed the streets of Chicago. Each vehicle tells a story, and it's fascinating to see how far firefighting technology has come. Whether it's the vintage Ward LaFrance or the rugged Seagrave, these trucks were built to last and perform under extreme conditions. Restoring these photos was a labor of love, and I'm glad they can now be shared with others who appreciate the history and legacy of firefighting.
