SAN FRANCISCO – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Build Conference – Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has taken two major steps forward in the evolution of digital and physical creation. The company announced a collaboration with Microsoft Corp. to integrate its 3D printing platform into Windows 10, and also plans to make its 3D modeling software compatible with Microsoft’s mixed reality solution, HoloLens.
In the first move, Autodesk is embedding its Spark 3D printing platform directly into Windows 10. This will give users a more streamlined and reliable experience when it comes to 3D printing, supporting a wide range of software, materials, and printers. To further support this initiative, Autodesk will provide free access to the Spark APIs for Microsoft developers, helping to expand the 3D printing ecosystem. Additionally, Autodesk will join Microsoft as a founding member of the 3D Manufacturing Format (3MF) Consortium, working together to develop a universal standard for 3D printing and data exchange.
“We’re at a pivotal moment for 3D printing,†said Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President of Developer Platform & Evangelism at Microsoft. “With the Spark platform integrated into Windows 10, we're giving developers the tools they need to confidently explore this new frontier in additive manufacturing.â€
The second initiative focuses on bringing 3D models created in Autodesk software—such as Maya or Fusion 360—into the mixed reality environment of HoloLens. This integration allows users to view full-scale digital models in real-time, which can significantly reduce the need for physical prototypes during product development. For game developers and filmmakers, this could open up exciting new possibilities for immersive storytelling. For engineers and designers, it offers a powerful tool for visualizing and refining designs before moving to production.
Looking ahead, professionals could design their ideas using Autodesk tools like Fusion 360, view them through HoloLens, and then prepare them for 3D printing on Spark-compatible devices. This seamless workflow represents a big step toward making 3D design and manufacturing more accessible to businesses and individuals alike.
“3D printing holds a lot of promise, but it's still complicated and not always reliable,†said Samir Hanna, Vice President and General Manager of Consumer and 3D Printing at Autodesk. “By working with Microsoft, we’re addressing these challenges head-on and helping to shape the future of how things are made.â€
