The global ethanolamine market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 5% to 6% over the next four years, with production increasing by an average of 2.8% per year. Since there are currently no large-scale ethanolamine plants planned for construction worldwide, the utilization rates of existing production facilities are likely to rise before 2010. As a result, global ethanolamine output is projected to reach 1.4 million tons in 2010.
Ethanolamine is a key fine chemical raw material used across various industries, including as a surfactant, pharmaceutical ingredient, pesticide additive, polyurethane component, rubber processing aid, textile additive, and antifreeze agent. According to data from 2005, the world’s total production capacity was 1.52 million tons annually, with North America, Western Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region accounting for 41%, 29%, and 20% respectively. The top four global producers—Dow, Ineos, BASF, and Huntsman—combined had a total capacity of 960,000 tons per year, representing approximately 63% of the world’s total ethanolamine production.
In 2005, the global ethanolamine output was 1.22 million tons, with an average plant operating rate of around 80%. Regional consumption varied significantly: the United States accounted for 57.46 million tons, Western Europe for 31.36 million tons, the Asia-Pacific region for 24.31 million tons, and other regions for 10.9 million tons. The largest application areas included surfactants (over 32%), herbicides (15%), and gas treatment applications (around 10%). This distribution highlights the diverse and essential role of ethanolamine in modern industrial processes.
