On Wednesday evening, March 4th, 2015, around 8 p.m., Rolling Meadows fire crews were dispatched to 5201 Carriageway Drive after reports of a fire in a third-floor apartment. As they approached, they were informed that a sofa was on fire, with flames already spreading up the wall. Battalion 15 quickly escalated the alarm to Code 4, indicating a working fire. Police who arrived first reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window, followed by news that a resident had jumped from the balcony. The alarm was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.
According to the Chicago Tribune, when firefighters arrived, police were already performing CPR on the victim. Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote confirmed that the individual had jumped from a third-floor unit and was later pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. No immediate details about the person's age or gender were released.
By around 10 p.m., the fire was considered "contained," though crews were still working to fully extinguish it. The first and second floors of the building had been evacuated, and firefighters were conducting a final sweep of the third floor. The alarm was later upgraded to a Second and then a Third Alarm before being called off just before midnight.
Several emergency responders were on scene, and multiple posts with photos and videos will follow. Notably, this building is located directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that previously experienced a three-alarm fire several years prior.
