Last night, thunderstorms swept through the northwest suburbs, prompting the Long Grove Fire Department to respond to a call about a lightning strike and fire at a home on Stayton Lane. The homeowners were inside their house when the lightning hit, but they didn’t realize it until neighbors knocked on their door to alert them. Upon arrival, the first responding units found flames at the roof peak where the lightning had struck, causing multiple holes in the structure. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, but remained on-site for an extended period to inspect the roof for further damage.
The initial engine unit struggled to access the scene due to the narrow, one-lane street lined with trees, so a smaller quint was called in to maneuver more easily. Additionally, heavy rain and ongoing lightning delays made it challenging to position firefighters safely on the ladder. The area lacks fire hydrants, so three tankers were dispatched as part of the initial response. One of those tankers, from the Palatine Rural Fire Department, helped refill Long Grove’s tanker before departing the scene.

The cooperation between Long Grove and neighboring departments, such as Buffalo Grove, ensured that the situation was managed effectively despite the challenging conditions.
