Long Grove lightning strike 4-3-11

Last night, as thunderstorms swept through the northwest suburbs, the Long Grove Fire Department responded to a call about a lightning strike and fire at a home on Stayton Lane. The homeowners were inside the house when the incident occurred, but they didn’t realize anything was wrong until their neighbors knocked on the door and urged them to evacuate. Upon arrival, first responders discovered flames at the roof peak where the lightning had struck, creating multiple holes in the structure. The fire was quickly brought under control, but firefighters stayed on site for some time to inspect the roof for further damage. The initial engine unit struggled to access the scene due to the narrow, one-lane street lined with trees, so a smaller quint was called in to maneuver more easily. Heavy rain and ongoing lightning in the area complicated the operation, delaying efforts to position firefighters at the top of the ladder. The neighborhood lacks fire hydrants, so three water tankers were dispatched as part of the initial response. One of these, the Palatine Rural Fire Department’s Tanker 36, helped refill Long Grove’s Tanker 55 before leaving the scene. Larry Shapiro was on-site and captured several photos documenting the event. A full gallery is available here. Images show the damage along the gutter line and roof, as well as the transformer that was blown out by the lightning, which also affected an attached unit in the garage. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove used a quint to access the roof and check for any signs of fire extension. The Long Grove Tanker 55 provided water to Squad 55, as no hydrants were available in the area. Despite the challenges, crews worked efficiently to ensure the home was safe and the fire fully extinguished.
