On Wednesday evening, March 4th, 2015, around 8 PM, Rolling Meadows fire crews were dispatched to 5201 Carriageway Drive following a report of a fire in a third-floor apartment. As they approached the scene, they were informed that a sofa was on fire, with flames already reaching the walls. Battalion 15 escalated the alarm to a Code 4 due to the intensity of the working fire. Police who arrived first reported seeing flames bursting from a third-floor window and later confirmed that a resident had jumped from a balcony on the same floor.
Upon arrival, firefighters found police performing CPR on the victim. According to the Chicago Tribune, the building was evacuated, and officials confirmed that one person had died as a result of the fire. The individual, whose age and gender were not immediately released, had leaped from the balcony of a third-floor unit, as stated by Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. The victim was later pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
By approximately 10 PM, the fire was considered "contained," though firefighters were still working to fully extinguish it. The first and second floors had been evacuated, and crews were conducting a final check of the third floor. The alarm was later upgraded to a 2nd Alarm and then a 3rd Alarm before being officially called off just before midnight.
Multiple emergency units responded to the scene, and several photos and videos will be shared in upcoming posts. Notably, this building is directly across the street from another structure in the same complex that had previously experienced a 3-Alarm fire several years earlier.
