Academicians make plans for energy conservation and emission reduction

China's economic development has shifted from "fast and good" to "good and fast." Energy conservation and emission reduction have now become top priorities, and the engineering and scientific communities are at the forefront of this transformation. On February 24th, 17 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering shared their insights on energy efficiency and emissions reduction at Nanjing University of Technology. They emphasized that for meaningful progress in these areas, environmental protection technologies must take center stage in economic development, thereby improving both the quality and sustainability of China’s growth. Academician Cao Xianghong highlighted the future challenges facing China's refining and petrochemical industry in 2020. He pointed out that limited crude oil resources, lower-quality feedstock, and the emission of "three wastes" during production pose significant obstacles. In response to the goals set during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," he outlined several key areas for attention: the efficient use of petroleum resources, the development of biomass-based transportation fuels and biochemicals, the utilization of coal resources for producing fuels and petrochemical products, and a strong focus on managing waste, ensuring product cleanliness, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Research and development in chemical and material sciences play a crucial role in advancing the circular economy and promoting renewable resources. Academician Zuo Tiejun discussed sustainable development of the materials industry from four perspectives: the role of materials in social progress, concerns about their development, the background of the circular economy, and strategies for achieving long-term sustainability. He stressed the importance of energy efficiency using data-driven insights and proposed that ethical values, legal frameworks, and technological innovation are essential in addressing ecological challenges. Academician Wang Xiqing presented a report on the treatment and recycling of refining wastewater, which contributes to building an integrated system for energy-saving and emission-reduction technology innovation. His work is seen as highly instructive. Academician Wang Jingkang also delivered a special lecture titled "Sustainable Development Challenges in Chemical Engineering." Ouyang Pingkai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Nanjing University of Technology, stated that energy conservation, resource protection, and sustainable development have become central themes of our time. He emphasized that the engineering and scientific community bears the responsibility for energy saving and emission reduction. As a leading engineering institution, Nanjing University of Technology has strong expertise in chemical engineering, metallurgy, and materials science, and is actively fulfilling its responsibilities. During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the country launched multiple major projects focused on energy saving and emission reduction, aiming to overcome key technical challenges. Experts at the meeting agreed that establishing robust technology support platforms, including national engineering laboratories and key research centers, is vital to achieving these goals. This collaborative effort reflects a growing commitment to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
