The head protection device made of polyurethane integral shell foam material ensures the comfort and safety of off-road vehicle users.
When off-road vehicles are driven in challenging environments, even with advanced suspensions, shock absorbers, and four-wheel drive systems, road bumps are inevitable. However, for long-distance outdoor travel, drivers and passengers need a comfortable and safe experience. That’s where the Suzuki Jimny comes into play. One of its standout features is the use of four head restraints made from elastic polyurethane integral shell foam, offering both durability and comfort. These high-performance components are manufactured by Linallac Foams SL in Linares, Spain, using Bayflex® K 5102 and Desmodur® PA 50, supplied by Bayer MaterialScience Baysystems Iberian Peninsula.
Dr. Noelia Mansilla, a specialist in Bayflex® overall shell foam, explains: “Polyurethane soft foam offers great design flexibility, allowing it to conform to the natural shape of the head, making it ideal for this application. When combined with polystyrene gaskets and metal fasteners, it effectively absorbs shocks from rough roads. The flexible polyurethane housing also provides a corrosion-resistant surface. Compared to traditional materials like PVC, polyurethane offers superior wear resistance, ensuring a longer lifespan. Plus, unlike textile coatings, polyurethane can be easily cleaned with standard cleaning products—important when driving through dusty or muddy terrain.â€
The Bayflex® system is available in multiple colors, including black, grey, and green, allowing the head restraints to match the interior or exterior color scheme of the vehicle. This not only enhances aesthetics but also improves the overall user experience.
In addition to its performance benefits, the manufacturing process used by Linallac Foams SL is highly efficient. Ana Ruiz, director of quality control at the company, notes: “The entire head restraint, consisting of an elastic foam core and an integral outer casing, is produced in one single step. It can be removed from the mold after just five minutes. This streamlined process ensures high productivity while maintaining top-quality standards and cost efficiency—key factors in the automotive industry.â€
The polyurethane head protection system was originally developed by Linallac Foams SL for the Anibal SUV, a model from Suzuki. Its real-world success has led to its adoption in other models as well.
About BaySystems®: Since March 1, 2007, Bayer MaterialScience consolidated all its global polyurethane systems under the BaySystems® brand. This move affected existing product lines such as Baydur®, and restructured the global network of polyurethane system companies.
