Han Shipbuilding Technology Leads China 5.8 Years

A recent report by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, comparable to China's Federation of Industry and Commerce, analyzed the current state of technological development in seven key manufacturing sectors—machinery, steel, electronics, automotive, shipbuilding, and others—between China and South Korea. The findings revealed that South Korea maintains a significant technological edge over China in these industries, with an average lead of 4.6 years. Notably, the shipbuilding industry stands out as the sector where South Korea leads the most, with an average technological gap of 5.8 years. Specifically, South Korea is ahead by 6.2 years in new product development, 6.3 years in design, and 6.2 years in production within this industry. This highlights the strong competitive position of South Korean manufacturers in one of the most complex and technologically demanding sectors globally. As both countries continue to invest heavily in advanced manufacturing, the gap in certain areas remains a critical point of focus for policymakers and industry leaders alike.
