Bayer Class and Shanghai Integrated Base: History of Human Resources Development of Bayer Material Science and Technology Group

Located in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, the Bayer Integrated Base represents a major investment of US$3.1 billion, with phased implementation of world-class projects in coatings, polycarbonate, and polyurethane raw materials. After over four years of construction, parts of the facility have already started production, while large-scale infrastructure continues to develop. Alongside this growth, the base has also focused on cultivating local talent. Dr. Bodi Ke, President of Bayer MaterialScience Shanghai Integration Base, recently stated, “The Shanghai base is developing well, and the positive impact of our human resources strategy is becoming more visible. Our greatest success lies in combining global expertise with China’s local capabilities. With integrated knowledge and multi-level talents, the Shanghai Base reached 500 employees by last November, and we expect over 1,000 employees once the factory becomes fully operational in 2009.” Cooperatively building a skilled workforce – “Bayer Class” World-class facilities require top-tier talent. To support local development, Bayer began cultivating specialized workers early on. In June 2002, Bayer (China) Co., Ltd. partnered with Shanghai Petrochemical Industrial School to develop a tailored training program. The school, known as one of China’s top vocational institutions in the chemical industry, provided strong technical education. Its proximity to the base allowed for easy recruitment of local students, who would later be trained for internships and future employment. To ensure high-quality education, Bayer invested one million euros to establish a laboratory, pilot plant, and pipeline installation workshop at the school. Additionally, selected second-year students were enrolled in the “Bayer Class,” a two-year vocational program. They received training using Bayer textbooks, focusing on chemical engineering, and gained hands-on experience through lab and workshop environments. Students also completed a 12-week internship at the integrated base to enhance practical skills. Since its launch, the “Bayer Class” has produced three batches of graduates, with nearly 100 students joining the Shanghai base. Others joined after the new factory opened. Dr. Bodick praised the program, saying, “Supervisors highly value these students, who are well-educated, skilled, hardworking, and enthusiastic.” Their performance has drawn attention from other domestic chemical companies. In the 2005 “Mingyuan Cup” competition, held for all Chinese petrochemical institutions, three “Bayer Class” students won first prizes in both group and individual categories. They received certificates and awards from the Shanghai Municipal Labor Bureau, highlighting their excellence. Attracting high-level talent and technology experts Bayer’s growth in China depends on attracting top professionals. Dr. Dai Mu, President of Bayer Greater China Group, emphasized that the region is strategically important. The company recruits talent through multiple channels, including advertising, headhunting, and campus recruitment from top universities. High-potential employees are sent abroad for advanced studies and then return to work in China, a key part of Bayer’s talent development strategy. Currently, 22 Chinese postdoctoral and Ph.D. students are studying in Germany, specializing in chemistry and engineering. They have visited Bayer’s headquarters and facilities, meeting with senior executives. Collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, launched in 2001, aims to support scientific research and develop young talent. This partnership was extended to 2010, with joint projects covering all areas of Bayer’s business. At an award ceremony hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, several researchers were honored for their contributions to polymer science and materials research. These efforts reflect Bayer’s commitment to innovation and long-term collaboration in China.
