Recently, Dongfang Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. successfully completed the in-plant type test for the first 400 MW steam turbine generator produced by the Eastern Power Plant in Shenzhen, featuring an F-class gas turbine. This achievement marked a significant milestone as it filled a critical gap in China's large-capacity all-hydrogen external cooling heavy-duty gas turbine market. The successful test demonstrated the company’s growing technical capabilities and positioned it as a key player in the energy sector.
In January 2003, Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group and Dongfang Electric Group formed a joint venture to win the supply contract for 10 F-class gas turbine power generation units under the first international bidding project for 23 combined cycle power plants in China. Shortly after, Dongfang Electric signed a subcontract for the supply of gas turbine generators and their auxiliary systems. In July 2003, Dongfang Motor reached a landmark agreement with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan, acquiring 100% transfer of world-leading gas turbine generator manufacturing technology through a technical service contract.
This collaboration enabled Dongfang Motor to absorb and integrate advanced technologies, aiming to develop an independent Chinese path in designing, bidding, and manufacturing large-scale heavy-duty gas turbine generators. Prior to this technological introduction, China’s gas turbine industry was at a very low level, with the largest domestically produced turbines and their associated generators only reaching 20,000 to 50,000 kilowatts. To bridge this gap, the Chinese government adopted a strategy of using the market to acquire technology, launching tenders to bring in foreign expertise. Dongfang Motor emerged as the leading candidate in this initiative.
Globally, generator technology is mainly divided into two schools: Westinghouse and GE. Dongfang Motor’s technology aligns more closely with the GE approach, while the 400 MW generator from Mitsubishi belongs to the Westinghouse school. This difference created challenges for Dongfang Motor in terms of testing, integration, and system compatibility. Despite these obstacles, the 400 MW gas turbine generator is one of the largest single-unit all-hydrogen external cooling turbines in the world, requiring high-level technical expertise.
To fully master the requirements of heavy-duty gas turbine generators, Dongfang Motor undertook extensive efforts over two years, ultimately filling the gap in China’s capability to produce such advanced equipment. During the manufacturing process, the company gained comprehensive knowledge of the technology and production methods, becoming the only manufacturer in China capable of independently bidding for and producing hydrogen-cooled heavy-duty gas turbine generators. This breakthrough not only boosted its technical reputation but also solidified its position in the global energy landscape.
