In the past, ultra-high-strength polyethylene (UHPE) fibers were exclusively developed by two countries—Netherlands and the United States—each holding independent intellectual property rights. Globally, annual production was limited to just 8,000 tons, making it a rare and highly valuable material. China has now become the third country to successfully produce this advanced fiber, with an annual output of 1,000 tons. This remarkable breakthrough was achieved by the Chemical Fiber Research Institute at Donghua University, which recently won the First Prize in the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award.
One of the most fascinating properties of UHPE fiber is its infinite breaking length in water, meaning it can withstand immense tension without snapping. When compared to steel wire ropes of the same thickness, it can bear up to eight times more weight. As the third generation of high-performance fibers after carbon fiber and aramid fiber, UHPE has become essential in military and aerospace applications due to its exceptional strength, lightweight, and bullet- and stab-resistant capabilities. Armor made from this material is significantly lighter than traditional options while offering superior protection.
Since 2002, China has integrated UHPE fiber into the recovery systems of the "Shenzhou" spacecraft, achieving excellent results. This application highlights the material's reliability and performance under extreme conditions.
Donghua University’s research team has been at the forefront of UHPE fiber development since the mid-1980s. They have worked on jelly spinning technology alongside global leaders, gradually overcoming key technical challenges such as spinning processes, extraction methods, and nanoparticle integration. Their efforts have led to six invention patents in critical areas, placing China among the world’s top innovators in this field. With continuous advancements, the university’s research continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in high-performance materials.
