Jiangsu University develops a new axial flow pump model for the South-to-North Water Transfer Project

After over a year of dedicated research and development, a team of experts from Jiangsu University and the Jiangsu Water Conservancy Science and Technology Consulting Center has successfully designed and developed 12 different axial-flow pump models with specific speeds. These models recently underwent rigorous testing organized by the Ministry of Water Resources and other relevant agencies as part of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project. All models were tested under identical conditions, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation. Zhou Junliang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chair of the evaluation committee, stated that the overall technical performance of these axial-flow pump models has reached world-leading standards. This achievement marks a significant milestone in China's efforts to enhance water management infrastructure and improve efficiency in large-scale water transfer projects. Axial-flow pumps are known for their low-lift capabilities and are widely used in water conservancy systems, municipal utilities, power plants, and shipyards. The water conservancy model plays a crucial role in determining the performance and efficiency of the pump. It is reported that three of the 12 models—models No. 20, No. 6, and No. 19—have already been implemented at key pumping stations during the first phase of the South-North Water Transfer Project, including the Wannian Gate Pumping Station, Liushan Pumping Station, and Taierzhuang Pumping Station. Their successful deployment demonstrates the practical value and reliability of the new designs. This breakthrough not only enhances the technological competitiveness of China’s water engineering sector but also supports the long-term goals of sustainable water resource management. The research team’s work is expected to contribute significantly to future water transfer projects and improve the efficiency of existing infrastructure across the country.
