The shield machine produced by Shenyang Wilt will be debuted in Shenyang next year.

It is anticipated that orders for the shield machines will come in during the second half of this year, with Shenyang’s new model set to make its debut at the start of next year. This advanced machine is expected to revolutionize subway construction in the city. Unlike previous models, which relied on Japanese technology and had a limited lifespan of just a few kilometers before needing replacement, the new Shenyang shield machine is designed to last significantly longer—capable of digging up to 10 kilometers on a single unit. At the 2006 Shenyang International Subway, Light Rail, and Urban Transport Exhibition, held on March 29th, Shenyang Weite Medium Tunnel Engineering Machinery Complete Equipment Co., Ltd.—the manufacturer of the shield machines for the Shenyang Metro—revealed detailed specifications of the new equipment. For the first time, the public was shown a full-scale simulation model of the shield machine, giving attendees a rare glimpse into the future of underground construction in the city. In the central exhibition area, Yuan Quanlong, an expert from the company's technical department, pointed to a 4-meter model of the shield machine and told reporters, “This is what the machine used in Shenyang next year will look like.” For years, the design and functionality of the shield machines used in the Shenyang subway remained a mystery. Citizens could only see images of them through the media. This time, however, they were able to see a 1:20 scale model made entirely from real components. Many visitors were amazed by the size of the machine, which is valued at tens of millions of yuan. They couldn’t help but wonder how such a massive device could create a large hole in the ground without disrupting traffic. According to Yuan Quanlong, the shield machine set to be deployed on the Shenyang subway site next year will be nearly 80 meters long, with a diameter of 6.28 meters and a weight exceeding 490 tons. The estimated cost is around 45 million yuan. Unlike standard shield machines, this one is specifically designed as an "earth pressure balance shield machine" to suit Shenyang’s unique geological conditions. Currently, two-thirds of the equipment must be imported from Germany, while the remaining parts are manufactured locally in Shenyang. This marks a significant step forward in China’s efforts to develop advanced tunneling technology independently.
