People-oriented Voith introduces driver efficiency assistance system

One of the challenges facing local public transport managers today is the growing need to reduce fuel consumption through smart driving practices. In the past, bus fleet managers relied on the driver's abilities. As smart driving is an important factor limiting fuel consumption, reducing emissions and improving driving safety, the correction of smart driving technology becomes more important. To meet this need, Voith has developed a tool to advise and motivate drivers in the short and long term to help them work hard to reduce fuel consumption.

Reduce operating costs and motivate drivers

The Voith OnEfficiency solution for transportation applications improves fuel efficiency in two ways. On the one hand, in terms of technology, the solution is based on the advanced configuration of the gearbox, and on the other hand, the solution is motivated by personnel. The driver improves driving behavior.

Johannes Ilg, vice president of product management at Voith Turbo, said: "Through intensive and extensive practical testing, Voith has developed OnEfficiency.DriverAssist, the latest tool in our portfolio of intelligent services. This tool assigns tasks to drivers. The way reward goals are achieved encourages them to drive in the most efficient way."

Real-time feedback on driving behavior to improve driving style

The tool captures multiple drive parameters of the vehicle, and the generated data is collected by the Voith SmartBox 2.0 and shows the driver real-time feedback on acceleration, deceleration and idle speed.

During their trip, at each bus stop and at the end of each trip, the driver receives a summary of the feedback that tells them about the daily performance of the driver. In addition, OnEfficiency.DriverAssist provides clear summary management reports to help drivers identify areas that can benefit from more training and reveal potential areas for improvement. Its services further provide an environment that identifies and rewards effectiveness, thereby motivating drivers to improve their driving style.

Improve fuel efficiency based on a transparent solution

Voith's purpose-built applications enable driver visualization, easy installation and run on popular Android devices. Drivers can get tips from an intuitive user interface to see how their actual behavior will affect current fuel consumption. At the same time, the operations manager can receive data on the management fleet. Fuel consumption and overall performance can be applied not only to the current route, but also to past routes.

Mark Hogenmüller, the first general manager of the German public transport company Reutlinger Stadtverkehr (RSV) who experienced the new Voith platform, said: "The driver is very interested in this technology. The goal is to use OnEfficiency.DriverAssist to promote a vehicle. The economical performance of the overall operation of the bus is improved by gently handling and reducing the driving style of fuel consumption. The measured energy saving effect is very significant. So far, the fuel consumption of the bus has been reduced by 10%."

Collect and analyze data through a comprehensive platform

Intelligent monitoring helps improve driving skills and performance and reduces fuel consumption, and data analysis can go even further than creating maintenance plans. OnEfficiency.DriverAssist uses intelligent data algorithms for performance calculations, collects all relevant data from the vehicle, and establishes a secure data connection with the IIoT platform OnCumulus. Voith also implements a pseudonym system to anonymously process all driver data to protect the privacy of each user.

Dr. Roland Münch, CEO of Voith Digital Solutions, said: "Using Voith's knowledge of drive technology and local public transport, the solution not only provides drivers with real-time information about driving style, but also for the team. Managers offer opportunities to use valuable solutions to improve energy efficiency."

This new solution will be available at the end of 2018.
