Recently, the world's largest tunnel shield, "Changjiang No. 1," took its first step in the cross-river journey, beginning to advance toward Shanghai's Changxing Island. This marked the official start of the "South Tunnel" project as part of the larger Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge initiative.
The "South Tunnel" will span approximately 8.9 kilometers, crossing the Yangtze River's South Port waters. It is set to break several records, including the longest continuous shield tunneling at 7.5 kilometers in a single stretch—making it the longest of its kind globally. The tunnel’s inner diameter measures around 13.7 meters, with an outer diameter of about 15 meters. The shield machine itself has a diameter of 15.43 meters, making it the largest in the world. At its deepest point, the tunnel will be buried over 55 meters beneath the riverbed during peak water levels, and there are eight bypass channels along the route to ensure smooth operations.
The entire Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project, which has a total investment of approximately 12.6 billion yuan, follows the "South Tunnel, North Bridge" design. The 8.9-kilometer "South Tunnel" will pass through Pudong's No. 5 Ditch and under the Yangtze River's Nangang waters before reaching Changxing Island. The "North Bridge" section, spanning 10.3 kilometers, will then connect Changxing Island to Chongming across the northern part of the river.
Once completed in 2010, the 25.5-kilometer-long Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge will serve as a six-lane expressway, drastically reducing travel time for Shanghai residents. From the city center, it will take just 40 minutes to reach Chongming without needing to take a boat. Additionally, the project has been designed with future expansion in mind, reserving space for potential rail transit lines that could be added in the years to come.
