The world's largest shield advancing into the Shanghai Yangtze River "South Tunnel" project

Recently, the world's largest tunnel shield, "Changjiang No. 1," took its first step in the cross-river journey, beginning to move toward Shanghai's Changxing Island. This marked the official start of the "South Tunnel" section of the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project, a major infrastructure initiative that promises to reshape transportation in the region. The "Changjiang No. 1" will travel through approximately 8.9 kilometers of the Yangtze River South Port waters, setting several records along the way. The shield will complete a continuous tunneling segment of 7.5 kilometers, making it the longest single-tunnel construction of its kind globally. The tunnel itself has an inner diameter of about 13.7 meters, with an outer diameter of around 15 meters. The shield machine used for this project is even larger, with a diameter of 15.43 meters, making it the biggest tunnel boring machine ever built. The project will reach a maximum depth of about 55 meters beneath the river at its deepest point, which is measured during the highest historical water levels. Along the entire route, there are eight bypass channels designed to ensure smooth operations and minimize disruptions. This level of engineering complexity highlights the scale and ambition of the project. With a total investment of approximately 12.6 billion yuan, the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge Project follows the "South Tunnel, North Bridge" strategy. The 8.9-kilometer "South Tunnel" will pass through Pudong’s No. 5 Ditch, cross the Yangtze River Nangang waters, and extend all the way to Changxing Island. Following that, the 10.3-kilometer "North Bridge" will span the northern part of the river, connecting Changxing Island to Chongming. Once completed in 2010, the entire 25.5-kilometer route will be designed as a six-lane expressway, offering a fast and efficient alternative to traditional ferry routes. For Shanghai residents, this means they can travel from the city center to Chongming in just 40 minutes by car, eliminating the need for boat crossings. Additionally, the project has been designed with future expansion in mind, including space for potential rail transit lines, ensuring long-term adaptability and growth.
