BASF increases its proportion of plastics production in China

BASF, one of the world's largest chemical companies, announced in Shanghai that its production capacity of its engineering plastics modification plant in its Pudong base will be increased by 65,000 tons on the basis of its current annual capacity of 45,000 tons. The first phase of the expansion project will increase production by 39,000 tons and is expected to be completed in 2013; the second phase will increase production by 26,000 tons, and it is planned to be completed in 2015.
The expansion project costs more than 10 million euros and can provide more than 50 jobs. By then, BASF's polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate engineering plastics production capacity in China will reach 110,000 tons, accounting for more than 50% of BASF's total production capacity in Asia. Due to the rapid development of the automotive and electrical and electronic industries, the consumption of modified polyamide and PBT products in Asia exceeded 900,000 tons in 2010, of which China's consumption accounted for 50%. It is expected that the Asian engineering plastics market will grow at an annual rate of about 8% over the next five years.
Ou Dafu, senior vice president of BASF's engineering plastics business in Asia Pacific, said: "BASF is committed to developing China's engineering plastics market and will take the necessary strategic measures to consolidate its market position. This expansion once again shows that we become the preferred supplier of customer engineering plastics. "At the same time, we will help customers cope with challenges through the Engineering Plastics Technology Center and apply innovations to include automotive seat structures, oil pan modules, sensors, and intake manifolds."
It is understood that apart from the Pudong base, BASF also has similar installations in Malaysia, South Korea and India. They are all part of BASF's global network of engineering plastics modification plants. After the expansion of the Pudong facility, BASF's annual production of engineering plastic products in Asia will reach 220,000 tons.
