Philips: Automotive LED headlights will grow in the next five years

Philips Automotive Lighting is one of the largest suppliers of lamps and accessories in the global automotive industry. On January 14th Gasgoo.com's interior and exterior seminars, Gasgoo.com interviewed Liu Zhiqiang, Senior Commercial Director of Philips Automotive Lighting, and Han Meng, Automotive Lighting Manager of Product Development and Application Center of Asia-Pacific Region.

Gasgoo.com: Philips has always adopted the concept of safety, environmental protection and fashion throughout the product. What is the relationship between the three? How to integrate fashion elements into safety and environmental protection?

Liu Zhiqiang: Automotive lighting is first of all a safety function. No matter what the light bulb is, it is for safety. In terms of energy conservation and environmental protection, not only in the field of automotive lighting, but also in other areas are promoting energy conservation, which is good for the environment, so we also attach great importance to energy conservation and environmental protection. The bulbs currently being developed, such as LED lights, are all moving toward energy conservation. In terms of fashion, many OEMs nowadays will choose lighting functions. Only stylish and distinctive styles can stand out from the crowd. At today's seminar, Dr. Han Meng's speech mainly focused on LEDs. We feel that LED has a good momentum of development and is also the future direction of development. It is in line with the three priorities mentioned earlier.

Han Meng: Today's seminar came to a lot of designers, and this kind of interaction is very good. Because there is a conflict between the appearance of the design and the function, the communication and contact with the design department in the early stage can make the product give full play to its advantages, while taking into account the fashionable styling.

Gasgoo.com: How to solve this conflict between function and styling?

Han Meng: The requirements for product selection are relatively large. For example, to do a front turn light, it is in the upper position, under the conditions of the environment is not harsh, we can use our standard products. We also have designed specialized products for demanding environments.

Gasgoo.com: Does Philips Lighting System have a corresponding market plan in the low-end car market?

Liu Zhiqiang: We are developing new products not only for high-end markets. Of course, there are many new technologies that must be applied starting from the high-end market, because the initial volume is not high, the cost is high, but we are developing itself not only for the high-end market.

In addition, there are differences in application. The mid-range models also use our LED, but the particles are not as much as high-end cars. High-end car cost pressure is not so big, and particles are more used. The new products we have developed have only a different focus on performance. For example, low-end cars pay more attention to energy conservation. From an application perspective, we have a lot of innovative products that emphasize the performance and application of which aspects of the most match, not to distinguish between high-end and high-end.

Gasgoo.com: There is a view that even if the cost of LED can continue to decline at the rate predicted by Moore's Law, it will take many years to achieve the same price as the HID lamp. However, if the cost of the LED family is to be comparable to that of a halogen lamp, it will take a long time. What do you think of these two?

Han Meng: Compared with traditional industries, LED is a semiconductor technology. Although it is not in strict accordance with the forecast of Moore's Law, in the long run, prices will go downwards. The market has done a lot of analysis, and we also made an assessment. Predictably, the price difference between LED and HID will gradually shrink in the next decade. LED lights will become more and more widely used in high-end cars. However, halogen lamps are still very competitive for compact or small-displacement vehicles.

We do not stop the development of other LEDs. We are also developing halogen lamps to improve product performance. In the next 20 years, LED will continue to increase, and the output of halogen lamps will remain stable. HID can feel the pressure from the LED.

Liu Zhiqiang: We see that the automotive market is growing rapidly. Although the first two years were affected by the financial crisis, starting from 2010, global car sales far exceeded sales before the financial crisis, which was mainly due to the growth rate of countries such as China and India. We believe that from the perspective of population, the space is still very large. The demand for LEDs will also continue to grow, so we will continue to do research and development to continuously improve our technology.

Gasgoo.com: What factors have prevented LED from failing to blowout as expected?

Han Meng: LED can be subdivided into applications in signal lights, such as brake lights and taillights, etc. LED has been applied in 30% of mid-end vehicles, and everyone is also more approving. However, on the front end, the usage rate is very low. LED is a system that many don't see. Not only is the light source to be bright, but also a large heat sink is required for thermal management, and the driving requirements are also high, such as whether the automotive voltage system is stable. We need to stabilize the current output, and problems can be detected automatically. All these increase the complexity of the system.

As a solid-state light source, LEDs can meet their performance requirements in the laboratory or at room temperature. However, the actual application conditions can be severe. For example, in the headlights, the ambient temperature can reach 105 degrees, causing the LED's light to be significantly attenuated, and the lifetime is also affected. Therefore, the use of LED systems is actually very complex, involving all aspects - a reliable system, effective thermal management, compact optical design and very complex drive. For traditional companies, the cost of early investment will be very high. This stylish, attractive appearance costs a very high initial investment. Since 2008, when the world's first full-size LED headlamps were applied to Audi, OEMs and lamp suppliers have invested heavily in this area. It is estimated that by 2015, LED will continue to develop rapidly. Typical applications are daytime driving lights. Relatively speaking, it is easier to achieve attractive appearance with less investment. After it, other lights, such as fog lights and corner lights, will also have quick applications. The last step, which is the most challenging, is high beam and low beam.

Gasgoo.com: In your speech, you mentioned the LED car headlamp market forecast, from the pioneer before 2008, the introduction period from 2008 to 2012, the penetration period from 2012 to 2015, and the acceptance stage after 2015. In other words, do you think LED lights will dominate automotive light sources in 2015 and cover almost all models?

Han Meng: It depends on what kind of application it is. The car headlights mentioned in the speech. Can not say the master, optimistic estimate to reach 2% by 2015 has been very good, the current application is only about 0.2%. However, the application of LED is very wide, like the driving lights, corner lights and fog lamps mentioned earlier, it is easy to do it, and it also accumulates experience while controlling costs. By 2015, all applications will appear, unlike the current European market, which is limited to high-end cars. Our characteristics are not the same as in Europe. We are in China and we have a very fast development with multiple entry points.

Gasgoo.com: Unlike most of the heat generated by halogen lamps or HID lamps, which are generated outside the luminaires, LEDs use low heat and heat, but they conduct heat around tiny silicon wafers. Please talk about the leading technology of Philips LED lamps in thermal management.

Han Meng: This is a constant challenge for our users. From the perspective of technology development, not only patents, R&D, and technology are leading, it is also important to listen to customer feedback. The feedback from customers is that heat dissipation is a very big challenge. We have done a lot of work to make it easy for users to use our products. Since 2008, Audi has made its first car and is committed to satisfying customers' requirements in terms of heat dissipation.

For the product, it is to reduce the thermal resistance as much as possible. Now we can guarantee that it is 130 degrees. By 2013, it is expected that 150 degrees can be achieved. With our products, users can reduce the size and weight of the heat sink by about 44%, making them more compact, lighter, and more convenient to use. This is also a feature of our products. For the packaging of automotive applications, it also fully meets the corresponding standards.
