Development of a new method for the synthesis of chlorine-free epoxy resin in Japan

Drying equipment

The Japan Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Showa Denko Co., Ltd. have jointly developed a method for efficiently synthesizing epoxy resins that do not use chlorine, using hydrogen peroxide oxidation technology. Showa Denko plans to implement this technology after 2014.

The technology first uses raw materials to synthesize allyl ether, and then oxidizes with hydrogen peroxide to epoxidize, thereby preparing glycidyl ether compounds. In this way, the glycidyl ether can be prepared without using halides such as chlorides, and the by-product is only water. The catalyst used in this technique is based on a combination of a tungsten complex and a phosphorus-based additive, in combination with an amine-based additive.
