On May 22, three Texaco coal-water slurry gasifiers, produced by Sinopec Nanjing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.'s Chemical Machinery Plant, were successfully delivered to the site of the 50,000-ton-per-year methanol project operated by Shandong Yanzhou Mining Bureau. These gasifiers represent a significant milestone in China's effort to localize core equipment for large-scale methanol production, as they were built using the internationally recognized Texaco water coal slurry gasification technology.
Currently, two leading technologies are used in coal-based methanol production: Texaco coal slurry gasification and Shell dry coal gasification. Among these, the Texaco technology stands out for its broad adaptability to different types of coal, high conversion efficiency, and relatively low environmental impact. While the outer shell of the Texaco gasifier is now manufactured domestically by several Chinese companies, critical internal components such as the chilled ring have not yet been fully localized. This new 50,000-ton methanol plant gasifier was designed by China Hualu Engineering Company, incorporating advanced Texaco technology. It was then manufactured by the Nanjing Chemical Machinery Plant, achieving full localization of the entire unit.
Each gasifier has a maximum diameter of 3.8 meters, a length of 18 meters, and weighs 212 tons. According to the plant’s project manager, this is currently the largest single-unit coal-water slurry gasification system in China. The successful delivery marks a major step forward in domestic energy technology development, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese-made industrial equipment.
