On May 22, three Texaco coal-water slurry gasifiers, developed by the Sinopec Nanjing Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. Chemical Machinery Plant, were successfully delivered to the site of the 50,000-ton-per-year methanol project operated by Shandong Yanzhou Mining Bureau. These gasifiers represent a significant milestone in China's efforts to localize core equipment for large-scale methanol production, utilizing internationally recognized Texaco coal slurry gasification technology.
Currently, advanced coal gasification processes such as Texaco coal-water slurry gasification and Shell dry coal gasification are widely used in coal-based methanol production. Among these, the Texaco technology stands out for its flexibility in handling various types of coal, high conversion efficiency, and relatively low environmental impact. While the outer shell of the Texaco gasifier is now produced domestically by several Chinese companies, critical internal components like the chilled water ring have yet to be fully localized.
The 50,000-ton-per-year methanol plant’s Texaco gasifier was designed by China Hualu Engineering Company, incorporating advanced Texaco technology. The unit was then manufactured by the Nanjing Chemical Machinery Plant, achieving full localization of the entire system. Each gasifier has a maximum diameter of 3.8 meters, a length of 18 meters, and weighs approximately 212 tons. According to the plant’s project manager, these three units currently represent the largest single-unit coal-water slurry gasification system in China, marking a major step forward in domestic energy technology development.
