The silt problem of the Huanghua Port channel was solved

Recently, it was revealed that the long-standing issue of siltation and sudden sediment accumulation at Huanghua Port has been successfully addressed, paving the way for the development of a comprehensive deep-water port. The challenge of maintaining navigable channels, particularly the problem of sudden siltation, had always been a major obstacle in transforming the port into a modern, large-scale facility. Over the past decade, through scientific research and practical construction efforts, especially following the severe impact of the October 2003 mega-storm, Hebei Province, the Ministry of Communications, and Shenhua Group collaborated to bring together 35 top experts in water transport for in-depth analysis. Through extensive study, they identified that siltation in the area is primarily caused by strong wind waves and irregular current movements, rather than external sediment sources. Based on this understanding, a breakwater project was initiated in September 2004 to control sediment buildup. By September 2005, a two-way 22-kilometer breakwater was completed, significantly reducing siltation issues. Last year, during Typhoon "Massa," which caused a storm surge with tides exceeding the warning level by 0.2 meters, no significant siltation occurred, confirming the effectiveness of the measures taken. This success marks a turning point for Huanghua Port, proving that it now has a scientifically sound solution to its siltation problems. Currently, Shenhua Group has commissioned relevant institutions to conduct a digital model study for the 300-meter-wide, two-way heavy-duty channel at Huanghua Port. This year, the channel’s width will be expanded from 140 meters to 170 meters, with a depth reaching 13 meters and a capacity of 200 million tons. In three years, the goal is to establish a two-way 100,000-ton waterway with a depth of 14–15 meters and a width of 300 meters, capable of handling over 500 million tons of cargo. According to recent reports, the "Huanghua Port Master Plan" prepared by the Ministry of Communications’ Planning Department passed expert review in late December last year. With a solid planning foundation and mature construction conditions, the development of the comprehensive port is now well underway. The plan envisions Huanghua Port working in conjunction with Tianjin and Tangshan Ports to form a group-style international port and navigation hub. This will serve as a key driver for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan region and support economic growth across provinces such as Shanxi, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Xinjiang, and other surrounding areas.
