The silt problem of the Huanghua Port channel was solved

Recently, it was reported that the issue of siltation and sudden sediment accumulation at Huanghua Port has been successfully addressed, paving the way for the development of a comprehensive deep-water port. The construction of a large-scale deep-water port at Huanghua has long been constrained by challenges related to channel siltation, particularly the problem of sudden sediment buildup. Over the past decade, extensive scientific research and practical construction efforts have been carried out. Following the severe storm in October 2003, Hebei Province, together with the Ministry of Communications and Shenhua Group, brought together 35 top experts from across the country to conduct focused studies on the issue. Through these efforts, researchers have now gained a solid understanding of the siltation mechanism. It has been determined that there is no external sediment entering the area, and the siltation is primarily caused by strong wind waves and irregular current movements. Based on this knowledge, Huanghua Port initiated the construction of a breakwater in September 2004. By September 2005, a two-way 22-kilometer breakwater was completed, significantly improving sand control. In the recent typhoon "Massa," which caused a storm surge, the tide level exceeded the warning level by 0.2 meters. However, no significant siltation occurred, confirming that the siltation problem has been effectively resolved. This marks a major breakthrough in the port’s development. Currently, Shenhua Group has commissioned relevant institutions to conduct digital modeling of the 300-meter-wide heavy-duty channel at Huanghua Port. This year, the channel will be widened from 140 meters to 170 meters, with water depth reaching 13 meters and capacity increasing to 200 million tons. The plan is to expand it further to a two-way 100,000-ton waterway within three years, with a depth of 14–15 meters and a width of 300 meters, capable of handling over 500 million tons annually. On December 28 last year, the “Huanghua Port Master Plan” prepared by the Ministry of Communications’ Planning Department passed an expert review organized by the Provincial Communications Department. This provides a solid foundation for the construction of the comprehensive port, with the necessary conditions now largely in place. According to the plan, Huanghua Port will be integrated with Tianjin Port and Tangshan Port to form a group-type international port and navigation center. This will serve as a driving force for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan area and support regions including Shanxi, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Xinjiang, Lubei, Yubei, and others, acting as a powerful engine for regional economic growth.
